For the 2009 racing season, even with a much reduce attendance,
the Madaz Motorsport team secured the 2000cc-3000cc IPRAWA Class
championship.
2009 Championship Season Results
The
Madaz Motorsport Team, thanks to the continued support and assistance
from Rotomotion Engineers has used the 2009
season to do development and testing on improvements to the Madaz
Motorsport Mazda RX7 race car. With new long circuit PB (personal best) times
recorded this year (64.8) the development of the car is on course to produce
some spectatular results. The teams target is a top 5 result in the
2010 IPRA Nationals which are to be held in Perth at the Barbagallo
Raceway.
The 2009 results have been somewhat subdued compared to previous years
due to the concentration on development reather than race results but
the team have had a number of race wins and won the July 2009 (Clem
Dwyer) race meeting outright.
The Improved Production one-off Nationals race meeting is scheduled to
be held at Barbagallo raceway in Oct 2010. With this great news for
Improved Production racing in WA the Madaz Motorsport team are going to
concentrate their development efforts on the 2010 Nationals event.
Which will mean again a reduced number of race meeting attendances for
the 2010 racing season.
The Madaz Motorsport team are looking forward to an exciting 2010 IPRA
Nationals in WA and hope that all our supporters and followers will
attend this fantastic event in Perth,WA.

The
Madaz Motorsport Team, thanks to the fantastic support and assistance
from Rotomotion Engineers and our panel beaters J & I Auto Body
Repairs, are the 2008 Improved Production Outright State Champions,
the IPRAWA Outright Club
Champions and the 2000cc-3000cc class champions! 2008 WA SmokeFree State Championships
After
some engine reliability problems plaguing the teams efforts over the
past two race meetings, the WA SmokeFree State Championships was to be
a major turning point. A freshly prepared engine had been built by
Rotomotion Engineers in an attempt to curb the reliability problems and
had been run-in at the previous weekends "tuning" day. The day
started out very wet and with 4WD cars to compete against the racing
was going to be tough for the 2WD Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7. Qualifying
saw the teams Mazda RX7 on pole position for Improved Production cars in the
wet which was very encouraging for the rest of the days racing
potentially being wet. Race
one was again very wet and as
expected the 4WD cars were very strong. The Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7
ran faultlessly throughout the entire race finishing a solid 2nd to the
4WD Damage Control EVO but still scoring some very valuable state
championship points.
Race two was a different story.
The rain had cleared and the previous categories racing had dried out the
track nicely. This suited the teams Mazda RX7 much better than a wet
track. Race two being a reverse grid saw the Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7
starting from near the rear of grid. With a good start the Madaz
Motorsport Mazda RX7 quickly made its way through the field to finish
the race in first place.
Race three was again dry with the
weather finally clearing up. A dry track again meant the Madaz
Motorsport Mazda RX7 was again in its preferred element. Starting race
three from pole for Improved Production cars gave the team a great starting
position. Unfortunately though a bogged started resulted in the Madaz
Motorsport Mazda RX7 being overtaken before the first corner by the
Damage Control EVO. However the Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7 was able to
re-take that position and work its way through to the front for
Improved Production finishing again in the top spot for the day.
These
results mean the the Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7 won the WA SmokeFree
State Championship race meeting overall for Improved Production cars.
Another fine accumulation of points for the State Championship which
had only two more race meetings to go. 2008 SuperTrucks and GT
Tander Trophy -
State Championship Round 4
As
only the 3rd year running for the annual GT Tander Trophy for Improved
Production cars, plenty of competitors were keen to win their
respective classes trophy for 2008. This saw a bumper entry of Improved
Production cars for this round of the state championship including the
return of the current 2007 State Champion, Dave McShane in his Mazda
RX7 and the inaugural winner of the Tander Trophy in 2006 - Kevin Ledger in his WRX STI.
Race one saw the Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7 qualify second on the grid.
With a bumper grid of combined WA Street Cars and Improved Production
cars a lot of josseling for the first corner was expected. The Madaz
Motorsport Mazda RX7 managed to get a good start and was the first
Improved Production car into the first corner. Fortunately for the
entire 10 laps of the first race, the Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7 was
never headed and claimed a win for the first race.
Race two, a reverse grid race, saw the Madaz Motorsport teams RX7
starting near rear of grid with only a few DNFs from race one starting
behind. It was a tough race with a lot of work to do to get back up the
front to gain valuable points for both the state championship and for
the GT Tander Trophy. The Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7 run faultlessly
for the entire 10 laps and managed to pass all but one other Improved
Production car to secure a second place finish in the second race. An in-car
video of this race can be seen here :
Race three, the final 15lap event of the meeting, saw the Madaz
Motorsport Mazda RX7 starting from pole position with the WRX STI of
Kevin Ledger right beside in the second grid position. The Madaz
Motorsport's team RX7 managed to get an excellent start but with only
2WD was no match for the 4WD WRX STI into the first corner. The first
two laps saw the Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7 hanging on very close to
the WRX but unfortunately after the 2nd lap an engine problem caused a
serious reduction in power. Even in
this state the Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7 manage to consitantly lap in
the 67s area (normally 65s) for the rest of the race. A safety car
incident meant all the hard word at the start of the race to build a
gap over the other Improved Production competitors was erased and with much less than normal power meant a
second place finish was under threat. Fortunately though the 67s lap
times the Madaz Motorsport teams RX7 was able to continue to put in
solidified an excellent second place finish even in with the much reduced lap times.
These
results, a race win for race one and two second place finishes in races
two and three resulted in the Madaz Motorsport team securing the 2008 Over 2000cc GT Tander Trophy! Natsoft Results Link
2008 AutoTrader Trophy -
State Championship Round 2
Our second event of the year saw the Madaz Motorsport
Mazda RX7 qualify on pole for the Improved Production class. Race one
was finished behind the safety car after a couple of incidents that
required the removal of a number of cars. The final result though saw
the Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7 finish the first race of the event in
first place.
In-car video of the first race can be seen here :
The second race saw the Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7 starting incorrectly
(due to a grid allocation error) at the rear of the grid. Though a
tough race the Madaz Motorsport team managed to catch and over
take all the Improved Production competitors to finally finish the
second race in first position.
The
third race was more of struggle for the Madaz Motorsport team as the
exhaust muffler on the car had been slowly collapsing internally
throughout the event with a resulting noticable loss of power. By the
third race the exhaust opening at the rear of the car had shrunk to
around the size of a 50c coin. The Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7 continued
on with the substantial loss of power and slower than normal lap times
to finish the final race in the top spot. Ensuring the very important
90 state championship points for the events three races. 2008
NightMasters Round 1 - State Championship Round 1
Our
first event of the year and a fantastic result for the Madaz
Motorsport team! Three races and three wins including setting the
fastest Improved Production qualifying time for the event. On top of
all that the
Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7 was over 1/2 second a lap faster than it had
ever been before on the Barbagallo raceway short circuit.
The
first race saw the Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7 pass and keep pace with
one of the unrestricted WA StreetCar turbo Mazda RX7s and in the process reset the Improved Production short circuit lap record.
From 0:55.6465 Set On 20/03/2004 By Kevin Ledger In A Impreza WRX STi to 0:55.3961.
Ref Natsoft Results Link
Such was the
improvement in the cars performance from last season.
Race number two was the first of two races in the dark and under
lights. There was an incident involving a few WA StreetCar
Mazda RX7s that unfortunately the Madaz Motorsport RX7 also got caught
up in resulting in the need to temporarily leave the racing circuit.
After a quick but safe re-join of the race the Madaz
Motorsport Mazda
RX7 managed to catch up to and pass all other IPRAWA competitors and
even a few WA StreetCar competitors as well finally finishing in first place.
Race number 3 was
uneventful with the Madaz Motorsport team electing to not stress the
car anymore than was required to win the third and final race of the
meeting. So after a few quick laps to ensure a safe first position the
pace was slowed just enough the ensure the completion of the meeting
and the gaining of the invaluable 90 State Championship points for the
events three races.

NightMasters Finale (November)
MADAZ Motorsport has had a great end to the 2007 season
by winning the Improved Production Racing category. Times were not as fast as
hoped at this November NightMasters meeting using the Barbagallo short circuit.
But finishing 1st place in race one and three to take out the maximum points for
for the event makes up for it.
Bio-Diesel Supertruck Round - State Championship Round 3 (August)
IPRAWA's second biggest meeting of the calendar, only to
the V8 Supercar Round, was a great event with a large crowd of
spectators with the two annual Over and Under 2000cc Tander Trophies
up for grabs. This is a long race event with the first two races of
the meeting 10 laps each with a final race of 15 laps. A total of 35 laps
compared to a regular race event of only 24 laps.
The SuperTruck round was not the best for the Madaz Motorsport team
unfortunately. Qualifying was a bit on the slow side and the reason for
this was not discovered until all the cars were lined up on the dummy
grid ready for race number one. The left-hand rear shock absorber
mounting bolt had either broken or come loose resulting in the shock
absorber hanging down under the car and touching the road. The warm-up
lap was attempted to try and see if it would be at all possible to run
the race even with the loose shock absorber but unfortunately there was
too much possibility of permanent damage to the shock absorber so the
race was aborted. This meant that the Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7 had to
start the second race on the following Sunday at the very rear of the
grid. With a bumper entry list for the event this meant around grid
position 27. The Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7 ran at an exceptional pace
during this race with the repaired shock absorber mounting and even with
a saftey car interventation of over two laps finally managed to get
to 10th position before the end of the race. But unfortunately the bad
luck of the event was not over yet.
During
the time between race two and race three the team decided to bleed the
front brakes in preparation for the long 15 lap final race event.
During the warm-up lap for the final race of the day the steering was
very shakey and prompted a re-entry into pit lane for a quick check
over. The team found both the front wheels bolts where not at their
correct tension so they were prompty tightened. Unfortunately
this
had cost the team two laps of the final event but it was decided to run
the car anyway just to verify everything was ok and to have some fun!
Even though the team finished last due to the lost two laps there was plenty
of over-taking practice gained and the Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7 ran
faultlessly for the rest of the race event. In both races entered the teams Mazda
RX7 was lapping as fast as or faster than the pace of the front running
IPRA competitors. What could have been!
Spices Catering Cup - State Championship Round 2 (July)
This event started with rather inclement weather and the race track
suffered a number of "oil downs" from earlier qualifying and events
prior to the Improved Production races. This resulted in all IPRA
competitiors lap times being somewhat slower than expected and a bit of
a 4WD advantage for those competitors. Even with this situation the
Madaz Motorsport RX7 managed to qualify in pole position and then lead
a substantial amount of the first race. Unfortunately due to running a
bit wide on the exit from the first corner while giving fellow
competitors from another category "racing room" the Madaz Motorsport RX7
drifted into the "marbles" on the edge of the corner and lost a substantial
amount of time all on the last lap of the first race. Even with this misfortune,
the team managed to finish in second place outright and gain some
valuable state championship and club points.
With rain showers still failing thoughout the day the second race was a
bit of a repeat of the first with the Madaz Motorsport RX7 managing to
finish a respectable second place to "Top Racing"s EVO 3 4WD
turbo.
The third and final race was cancelled due to a previous categories
accident which resulted in the doctor having to leave the circuit with
an injured competitor and head to the Royal Perth Hospital.
Autumn Cup - Club
Championship Meeting (May)
With the Madaz Motorsport team getting a handle on the new
Yokohama A048R IPRA control tyre the team's Mazda RX7 race car continues to
improve in both speed and tyre wear.
Qualifying 3rd in class for the first race saw the Madaz Motorsport
Mazda RX7 improve on its qualifying position
and finish the first race in 2nd place. The second race of the day -
the reverse grid - always provides high
entertainment for the spectators but can be a very hazardous
start for the competitors. The Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7 got a great start
but was held up for a few corners on the first lap. A couple of other
IPRAWA competitors had a slight tangle and left the track temporarily
allowing the Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7 to cross the start/finish line
on the first lap in first place. The Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7 ran
faultlessly for the rest of the race and held out a very fast and hard
charging current Improved Production State Championship WRX to finish
the second race in 1st place by a mere 2/10ths of a second.
The third and final race of the day saw the Madaz Motorsport
Mazda RX7 finish in 1st place again. These results concluded an excellent
Autumn Cup meeting for the Madaz Motorsport team. With a personal best lap
time (64.9 secs) for the long circuit at Barbagallo raceway and the outright
win of the race meeting for the Improved Production category.
AutoTrader Cup - State Championship Round 1 (April)
With continued improvements in lap times and speed, the first
state
championship round was looking to be a good
start for Madaz Motorsport. The Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7 started the
meeting with the teams first pole position (for Improved Production
cars) in qualifying.
An accident with a non-State Championship competitor (Street Car Class)
after only a few laps into the race put an unfortunate early end to any
potential results in race one with a DNF due to the accident. This
resulted in a starting position at the back of the grid for race 2
which saw the Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7 managing a very hard earned
2nd place in class finish. This was not enough though to gain a good
starting grid position for the final race of the day but with the
continuing speed improvements in the car even in the damp conditions
the Madaz Motorsport Mazda RX7 finished the final race 3rd in
class.
These results see the Madaz Motorsport team Mazda RX7 currently in 6th
place outright in the Improved Production State Championship standings
and 4th in the Over 2000cc State Championship category.
NightMasters Round 1 (February)
MADAZ Motorsport has had a great start to the 2007 season
with personal best fastest lap (55.7 secs) at the Feb NightMasters
meeting on the Barbagallo short circuit and a 1st place in race one for
club points.
With the continued support of all the great guys at
Rotomotion,
friends, Wilkinson Suspension and Kerry Wade at the Bentley Bridgestone
Tyre center, MADAZ Motorsport are looking forward to an exciting 2008
racing season.
